Our Story:
Geneseo, Illinois was established in the 1830s when eight families from Genesee County, New York settled here to form a community that valued religion & education. Firmly opposed to slavery, the original founders of Geneseo made it a priority to help those escaping bondage and made Geneseo, IL an important stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1957, Geneseo Art League began with just a handful of painters who felt a great need to gather in support of one another and to foster the arts in this small community of 6,500 residents. As a not-for-profit group, the League depends upon the generosity of The Geneseo Foundation and loyal patrons -- along with a nominal yearly dues (presently $30, with student membership of $10) and engages in fund-raising activities on it's own behalf. There are, presently, approximately 30 active members; additionally, we have a large patron and business support group. Geneseo Art League sponsors yearly events such as the Christmas Forest in November and the Maple City Fine Arts Show in May. The range of creative talent among GAL members include: oil/watercolor/acrylic painters, mixed media artists, wood-working and jewelry, photographers, & sculptors. All types of creative works are encouraged & welcomed. Members often donate--both individually and as a group--works of art for charitable and/or community causes. Members also often teach classes at the GAL gallery & GAL has visiting guest artist/instructors as well.
